so I did my scientific illustration final on whale evolution. This painting’s 3 feet long!
I did my best to illustrate every species as accurately as possible to the best of my ability. The sizes are vaguely correct but if they were actually to scale, the smaller species would be even smaller and the larger species would be even larger (basilosaurus is slightly bigger than a blue whale… and pakicetus is the size of a medium sized dog)
YEAH evolution!

I’m reblogging this because I forgot that I wrote all this. Twitter can do that.

South American Leaf Fish (Monocirrhus polyacanthus)
An incredibly-adapted species, this fish is camouflaged to mimic a dead leaf, both in body shape and pattern. It can change colour to match its surroundings and has a projection from its bottom lip that resembles a leaf stalk. When hunting, it stalks its prey in a head-down stance, appearing to drift towards it like a dead leaf drifting in a current. When it strikes at an item of prey the entire mouth protrudes outwards, forming a large tube into which the prey is sucked, usually head first. This happens so quickly it is often difficult to see. It can swallow prey almost as big as itself in this way.

@5 days agoNew study is a further testament to the hardiness of the water bear
The water bear is the cockroach of microbes; they nearly always pull through when researchers throw them into Armageddon-like conditions. Now it seems that even their unborn young have unprecedented endurance.
The microscopic animals called water bears already have quite a number of accomplishments under their belts. In experiments, they’ve survived the vacuum of space, large doses of radiation, extreme heat, extreme cold, and extreme pressure, giving scientists cause to believe that the little guys could potentially live on other planets and weather long journeys across space…
But to pull this off, they’d have to reproduce. Scientists have now exposed water bear eggs to three of these stressors—extreme temperature, vacuum, and a dose of radiation so strong that exposure to even a fraction of it would kill a human in days. They found that provided the eggs are given a chance to dehydrate themselves and go dormant, surprising numbers that survive: more than 70% of eggs for the temperature test, and more than 50% for the radiation test, while vacuum-exposed eggs hatched at similar rates as control eggs.

Argentina JUST PASSED a groundbreaking gender identity bill!!!
From now on, people will be able to change the name and gender on their ID without needing psychiatric permission or any body modifications. Furthermore, anyone who does want hormones or surgery will be able to access them for free through the public and private health system.
It was passed unanimously today by the Senate :-D

the other day my friend and i were talking about medieval art and i was like “the way they draw lions is so hilarious because none of those european people had ever seen a lion and just continued imitating other people’s drawings of lions and descriptions of lions and the final result was drawings that did not really resemble lions at all” (pause in this story to thank cat for introducing me to the wonders of rubbish lions) and she said “OH MAN HAVE YOU EVER SEEN OLD KOREAN ART OF TIGERS? IT’S GOT A SIMILAR SITUATION”
so i remembered this just now and looked it up
look at these tigers, y’all
